The new development
- The £500 million PFI project is the largest ever single investment in Manchester healthcare
- The new development comprises 9,000 tonnes of steel, 10,000 square metres of glass and 1.3 million km of electric cables
- It look 1,200 workers 47 months to build (an estimated total of 8,500,000 work hours)
- The development includes 7,500 square metres of state-of-the-art biomedical laboratories
Research and innovation
- Trust researchers produce over 600 peer-reviewed publications each year
- Current research projects have attracted external funding of £20 million
- Our Biomedical Research Centre links the Trust and The University of Manchester to form Europe's largest clinical academic campus
- Researchers at the centre have discovered a new link between a rare childhood disorder and a common immune system disease
- Another researcher at the centre has found the answer to a genetic problem causing accumulation of male hormones (called androgens) in women
- We're using genes from fireflies and jellyfish to investigate possible causes of infertility and autoimmune diseases in humans
Our hospitals
- The Manchester Royal Infirmary is the oldest of the Trust's hospitals, with a history dating back to 1752
- The Royal Manchester Children's Hospital is the largest of its kind in Europe
- There were 5,167 babies born at Saint Mary's Hospital in 2008/2009, one fewer than in 2007/2008
- We have completed over 3,500 transplants in our Renal Transplant Unit, making it the most experienced of its kind in the UK
- The Trust is home to the UK's first centre of andrology, dealing with men's health and diseases, especially of the reproductive organs
